oh to be those salty flakes on melted chocolate

Postpartum is a weird time. You almost never feel fully “normal,” and even though I’ve technically been here before, it still feels brand new.

The first time around, I spent so much energy trying to get back to my “old self.” But that version of me felt completely foreign in this new role. Now? I’m trying not to fight it. I don’t totally remember who I was in the before times (pre-COVID feels like a different lifetime), and while I hope to catch little glimmers of her again — maybe when the baby starts sleeping — right now I’m just focused on doing what feels good and showing up as best I can.

How am I transitioning this into a cookie recipe? Not entirely sure. But here we are. We will get there!

This phase of life feels loose. Days can blur together. Meals blur together. So when I get a random craving — like a banana bread chocolate chip cookie — I don’t overthink it. I just make it happen.

And honestly? These cookies are perfect. They feel like something you’d get at a really good café — crisp edges, soft center, a little salty-sweet magic treat. The dough actually gets better as it sits, so keeping it in the fridge means you can bake a single cookie at the end of a long day which is so fun.

While I know not everyone reading this is postpartum, I do think this season — late winter — carries a similar energy. Slow. Heavy. Transitional. A little stodgy. Like we’re waiting for something brighter just ahead. Whether you’re in this season literally or figuratively, I hope these cookies offer a bit of comfort and help you move through it gently.

Because yes, the days are long but the years are short. So you might as well dig in and make yourself a cookie once in a while.

These are vegan as written and can easily be made gluten-free, too.
